The BMW Z4 M40i, which costs 60,950 Euros, is due for a fuel consumption check.
The BMW Z4 M40i makes it easy to like it. Just the fact that it now has a fabric soft top instead of the bulky folding top again saves 50 kilograms in weight. With better equipment, the M40i weighs 1,577 kg – exactly 30 kg less than the last old Z4 35is, which also had 340 hp. A few more numbers to show how much better the new Z4 is? It accelerates 0.6 seconds faster from a standing start to 100 km/h, sweeps 4.6 km/h faster through the slalom and is also supposed to use less fuel. So what about fuel and maintenance costs?

Our test consumption
BMW specifies a standard WLTP consumption of 8.4 liters of Super for the Z4 M40i. It departs from this value in everyday life; we have calculated an average consumption of 9.8 liters, which results in fuel costs of 11.76 euros per 100 kilometers. On the Eco lap, the BMW consumed 6.9 liters, while on the commuter route it consumed 9.8 liters. If the BMW was driven in a sporty manner, consumption rose to 13.0 liters. The fuel costs are calculated on the basis of the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (01.10.2020 / Super: 1.20 Euro/Liter).
The test consumption consists to 70% of the commuter round and 15% each of Eco and Sport.
Monthly maintenance costs
Anyone who drives as resource-sparingly as we do on our Eco-Lap will reduce fuel costs for 100 kilometers to 8.28 euros. The rather violent pace results in a total of 15.60 euros. The motor vehicle tax for the new BMW Z4 M40i costs 256 Euro per year, the liability insurance is 355 Euro. Partial and fully comprehensive insurance come with additional 135 and 488 euros respectively. Monthly maintenance costs of 368 euros are paid by those who drive the BMW 15,000 kilometers per year. If the mileage is doubled, the sum rises to 679 euros. The loss in value is not included in this calculation.
The BMW Z4 M40i costs at least 60,950 Euros
How to test
The auto motor und sport test consumption is made up of three differently weighted consumption runs. The so-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which measures 21 kilometers on average. A particularly economical, approximately 275-kilometer-long eco-trip is included in the evaluation with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports drivers’ lap. The length is roughly the same as the Eco-Lap, but the route contains a larger proportion of freeways and therefore higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the “more fuel” portal on the day the article was created.
The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wearing part costs and vehicle taxes for an assumed annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. Basis of the calculation are the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for Haftpflicht and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). SF12 means a discount rate of 34 per cent for third party liability and 28 per cent for fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz.
Conclusion
The BMW Z4 M40i with 340 hp and an average value of 9.8 liters of super per 100 kilometers ends up in the auto motor und sport test consumption of the 60,950 euro expensive BMW Z4 M40i with 340 hp. Thus the fuel costs on this distance amount to 11.76 euro. The monthly maintenance costs are 368 Euro (15,000 km annual mileage) or 679 Euro (30,000 km annual mileage).
