Just think how fast the time flies! It was not so long ago when any kit of fiberglass body kit for cooperative production for front-drive VAZ was called “tuning”, and now mature domestic companies are ready to offer both individual fitting and tuning of the car for a customer, and low-batch, but densely loaded “machine”. By the will of fate in our hands appeared the representatives of both domestic tuning. Therefore, in this material we shall try to combine incompatible and to bring together two sides of one river.

So, in the red corner of the ring, there is Lada Revolution 1, representative of Togliatti company “Torgmash” – almost the court tuning atelier of AvtoVAZ. And in the other corner of the ring, in the blue corner, there is a representative of the opposite trend in tuning. This car was built by the St. Petersburg tuning studio K-ART engineering for the specific owner – according to his tastes, wishes and anatomy peculiarities.

Round One

Recently, the ties between the company and the factory have become so close that Torgmash’s products were listed on the official AvtoVAZ website in the small-batch cars section. This is indeed a serious achievement, for which the company can only be congratulated. Now also we have our own analogue of AMG.

Lada Revolution 1 is an attempt to establish a small-scale production of a charged car, “packed” in accordance with certain average demands. In fact, despite a fairly extensive range of components for tuning, the most common requests of customers fit into a fairly small list. About the same principle the Japanese car companies acted when they began to conquer the world market. The Japanese analyzed the list of the most popular options and began to install them “by default”. Successful initiative was picked up by other manufacturers, and now it has become common practice.

In the case of Lada Revolution 1 car price rises to $ 12 thousand. The lion’s share of the cost of technical improvements came, of course, to the engine. The 16-valve engine has been increased to 1580 cubic meters, it received new camshafts with slotted gears and modified injection system. All this gave an increase in power up to 125 hp, which the engine develops at 5,700 rpm. In the achieved result is the merit of the exhaust system, consisting of the exhaust manifold “spider” of its own production, working on the principle of “4 in 2 in 1”, resonator Zara and muffler Remus.

Slightly more expensive than the exhaust system cost work on the transmission, which appeared the so-called “twelfth” range with converged ratios and the main pair of 4.06, as well as modified gear shift drive with a shortened lever stroke. Now you can safely say that this transmission fully meets the characteristics of the motor.

Intervention in the braking system is even more expensive than in the transmission. But the amount of work is almost comparable. The front brakes are 14-inch Graf, and the rear brakes are also disk-braked. Soft racing brake pads Ferodo are everywhere, and instead of the standard vacuum booster appeared modified, with progressive characteristic, allowing to measure brake pressure more accurately.

The suspension has an updated rear beam with rigid joints, two-tube gas shock absorbers “Torgmash” and the rear springs of its own production. Stretch bar took its place between the front struts and welded anti-roll bar in the rear suspension. And finally, all this splendor rests on 15-inch wheels Slik, shod in Pirelli P5000 tires.

Technical part ends here, all the rest is ponces. Who would understand how much this car cost to its owner without them? “He who dines the girl, dances her” – therefore, designers have developed the program of changes of both exterior and interior. Aggressive bodykit with integrated in a forward bumper Hella 500 foglights and an impressive antifender on a trunk lid testifies to the amount of money spent. When blowing the car in the wind tunnel of Dmitrovsky proving ground we found out that with a slight increase of the drag coefficient the distribution of lift has improved greatly. This is a direct merit of well-designed front bumper and antifender. Anyway, there is nothing surprising in this result – the hull for the Lada Revolution was designed by Andrei ruzanov, who was engaged in aerodynamic tuning of the “ten” while working at the VAZ.

But everything pales before the magnificent interior. However, one never spares money for oneself. But at least you are sitting in Recaro, hold a helm or a knob of a gear stick Sparco with your hands, tread metal plates on pedals from Torgmash with your feet, your ears are protected by noise insulation Noisebuster, and your eyes stare at devices with white scales and scarlet LED illumination. By the way, not only backlighting of devices, but also all interior, including original door panels is executed “in crimson tones”.

All these frills and raised the price of the Lada Revolution 1 almost twice compared to the basic “ten”. However, if you assemble such a “constructor” yourself – somewhere to put such a dodger, in another place to make the engine – probably will cost even more. As they say, the wholesale buyers get a discount! I think that the initially planned 10 copies of the Lada Revolution 1 will easily find their owners. Especially since their production, although almost on a mass production line, but in some details the cars will differ.

Round two

The St. Petersburg tuning atelier K-ART engineering can be justifiably proud of this car. Preparation according to the canons of motorsports has turned a serial vehicle into a professional tool for dynamic driving. The engine is built almost sporty: modifications, including the installation of forged pistons with increased stroke, brought the engine volume to 1800 cc, and the standard air filter was replaced by a “zero” resistance element from K&N. There was a very original exhaust system, developed on the basis of Simons components – where the exhaust pipe of a huge diameter with a resonating “can” is permanently attached to the body and connected to the exhaust manifold through a bellows, which dampens the engine vibration. Because of the small number of resonators the sound of the exhaust system is very sporty – when the revs go over three thousand, it becomes quite sharp. However, some of those who buy Remus are sometimes dissatisfied with insufficiently sporty timbre of its sound.

The gearbox completely corresponds to the predilections of the person who will use it. All six gears are “stretched” so that the engine easily “picks up” both from the third and even from the fourth gear. Suffice it to say that the third gear has divided into the third and fourth, and the fourth and fifth became the fifth and sixth. Besides, the differential lock and the iron mechanism of gear selection are installed, which is preferable to the aluminium “ten”.

Suspension characteristics are designed for high-speed movement on asphalt. Very stiff Koni Sport shock absorbers complete with Mad springs, upper supports on SKF ball joints and reinforcement of front and rear stabilizers have left the least comfort, but improved handling by an order of magnitude. If to add to it low-profile “fifteenth” rubber Michelin Pilot Exalto 195/50, it is possible to imagine how rigid is in the car with such adjustment of a suspension.

Often used in autosport rims of “Aviotechnologia” production and red calipers of 15-inch brake disks work for the image of “not simple” car. The “plates” of additional headlights Hella look aggressive, but not vulgar. A reduced clearance and lowered back part of the body with cut out arches give the car a fighting rally look.

The unity of style which is observed in every detail is remarkable in the appearance of the automobile. There are no unnecessary shades even under a hood – everything is made in black and blue colors, even a plastic engine cover. Also the interior is very strict with stylistics. Only shiny metallic Sparco pedals and a red fire extinguisher are distinguished. Blue inserts in Recaro chairs and a steering wheel of the same tint blend well with dark interior’s plastic.

But this car, which eventually cost $10,000 to its owner, is not for everyone. Such tuning will be appreciated by those who is used to moving around the city at his own pace and who can understand the charm of domestic car, which is able to go so, as not capable even of the most perfect serial automobile.

Judge’s decision

All the same, it is impossible to compare these two cars directly as it is impossible to reduce a professional and an amateur sportsman in one duel. If Petersburg “Ten” is a professional sportsman, the Togliatti is intended for those who only started to try themselves in sports, but already tasted the joy of the first victories. In time, this person will decide exactly what he needs from the car, and will move if not to exactly the same blue “Ten”, then certainly to something similar. Therefore, two sides of the river Tuning did not coincide. And there is no need to. After all, junior and super league games can coexist perfectly in sports.
